The term  ‘cottage dormer’  came about because  to architects they provide an ideal means of creating ‘rooms in the roof’, especially in houses – new or old – that do not extend to two full storeys. So it is no surprise that they appear frequently in cottage style buildings.

The key to this type of conversion is scale and location. Well designed dormers frequently look as though they are an original feature.

Keeping the construction in proportion to the original roof space  (not too large) sighting the dormer correctly in relation to the roof line and using matching tiles are all important considerations for this type of dormer.
